Why see a physiatrist?

Regaining your strength and mobility after a serious illness, injury or surgery may require the services of a physiatrist. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is the medical specialty that deals with diagnosing, evaluating and treating patients with physical disabilities. These disabilities may arise from conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system, such as:

  • Neck and back pain
  • Sports/work-related injuries
  • Painful conditions affecting the limbs(example, carpal tunnel syndrome)
Dr. Watson also sees patients with disabilities resulting from neurological trauma or disease such as spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, stroke, nerve and muscle disorders. His goal is to help you achieve maximum restoration of your physical, psychological, social and vocational function through comprehensive rehabilitation. Pain management is often an important part of the role of the physiatrist.

What is Electrodiagnostic Medicine?

For diagnosis and evaluation, a physiatrist may include the techniques of electromyography to complement the standard history, physical, x-ray and laboratory examinations. Dr. Watson has expertise in the appropriate use of therapeutic exercise, prosthetics (artificial limbs,) orthotics and mechanical and electrical devices.
